In the same year he was elected as Deputy of the Italian Parliament and became Minister of Innovation and Technology for the Italian government till 2006. From 2008 to March 2013 he was a Senator of the Italian Parliament. He also was President and chief executive officer of Expo 2015 Spa from 2009 to 2010. From 1994 to 2006 a director of Bocconi University in Milan.
